Ice Dogs fall to Ice in Sydney

Ice Dogs fall to Ice in Sydney

Juno Tsalis

For the final time this season the Ice Dogs took on the Ice. Despite a strong performance, the team fell to the rivals by a score of 1-4.

The first period remained scoreless at Macquarie Ice Rink. The Ice Dogs put up strong chances, including when Grant Toulmin almost gave the home team the go ahead goal on the power play 12 minutes into the period. The Ice Dogs were sent to the penalty kill once during the first 15 minutes when Dave Dunwoodie was assessed two minutes for roughing. The home team was able to successfully kill the penalty and both teams finished out the first 15 minutes scoreless.

After a scoreless first period, the Melbourne Ice broke through with 12 minutes remaining when Niklas Dahlberg scored. With a final five minutes remaining Viktor Gibbs Sjödin gave the Ice a two goal lead on the power play. The Dogs responded soon after, when Ellesse Carini scored his 5th of the season on an unassisted play to cut Melbourne’s lead in half. Despite some key saves from Damien Ketlo, Matt Armstrong managed to slip a final puck into the net to give the Ice a 3-1 lead at the end of the second.

The Battle continued into the third period and again the Ice Dogs began creating strong scoring opportunities and strategic plays. Again Damien Ketlo made key saves however the Melbourne’s Jason Baclig was finally able to beat him on the power play, giving the Ice a 4-1 lead with just over two minutes remaining.

Despite the loss, the Ice Dogs held their own against the Ice and look to fight back when they take on the CBR Brave for a final time, at home tonight.
