Weekend Preview: Dogs vs Bears and Adrenaline
Tuesday, July 11, 2017 - Submitted by Juno Tsalis

The Sydney Ice Dogs have a busy weekend ahead of them.
On Saturday they face the Sydney Bears (19 points) in the battle for Sydney followed by their final meeting with the Adelaide Adrenaline (16 points) on Sunday night.
The Ice Dogs currently sit on 5th place in the standings with 24 points. Depending on the results of other games throughout the league, the Ice Dogs have the opportunity to move into a top four position by the end of this weekend.

ICE DOGS VS. BEARS

Saturday's game is the third of four meetings between the Ice Dogs and Bears. The Ice Dogs have shutout the Bears in both matchups this season and defeated the rivals, 3-0, in their last game on June 10th at Macquarie Ice Rink.

The Ice Dogs have won 13 of the past 18 games against the Bears, dating back to April 27th 2013 and have won 35 of the 58 contests (31-21-4-3) since the club’s founding in 2002. In addition, the Bears were topped by the Northstars in their most recent game by a score of 5-3.

ICE DOGS VS. ADRENALINE

All-Time: 21-26-1-5 (12-7-1-3 at home; 9-19-0-2 on the road)

2016-17: Sunday's game is the final of four meetings between the Ice Dogs and Adrenaline, and the second of two meetings between the teams at Macquarie Ice Rink. The Ice Dogs defeated the Adrenaline, 5-1, in the last meeting on May 7th in Sydney. Grant Toulmin, Ellesse Carini, Rory Rawlyk, Tomas Manco, and Stephen Johnston have all registered at least two points thus far in the season series, and seven different Ice Dogs have tallied a goal against the Adrenaline this season. Three of those players (Toulmin, Carini, Johnston) have scored in more than one of those games.

The Ice Dogs have won three of their last four games against the Adrenaline, dating back to Aug. 6, 2016. In addition, the Adrenaline were shutout in their last game, by the Melbourne Ice, 2-0.

WHO’S HOT

  • Grant Toulmin has registered 16 points over the past seven games including 11 goals and two hat tricks, the first coming against the Newcastle Northstars and again on July 1st against the Perth Thunder. He heads the Ice Dogs in goals (16) and points (25) this season and leads the AIHL in game winning goals (4). In addition, the forward ranks 13th in points amassed and ties first in the number of goals scored in the league this season. Toulmin registered 4 points (3 goals, 1 assist) against the Mustangs last weekend to continue his streak.

  • Damien Ketlo has posted an 8-8-0 record, along with a 2.39 goals against average (GAA), a .931 save percentage (SV%), and 2 shutouts in 16 games in 2017. He leads all AIHL goaltenders in SV% and is only one of three goaltenders to record two shutouts this season – both of which came in games against the Bears.

  • Stephen Johnston recorded 6 points (3 goals, 3 assists) against the Mustangs last weekend to continue his strong play.

STATUS REPORT

  • Dave Dunwoodie will not play on Saturday due to his two game suspension following the forward’s fight with Andrew Belic against the Mustangs last Saturday.
  • Dave Upton will miss his 10th game due to injury
  • Billy Cliff will miss his 13th game due to injury
