Ice Dogs fall to Bears in Rivalry Showdown
Saturday, July 15, 2017 - Submitted by Juno Tsalis

For the third time this season the Ice Dogs took on the Bears in the battle for Sydney. Despite a strong performance, the team fell to the rivals by a score of 2-4.

The Bears opened scoring in the first period when Ryan Annesley netted a power play goal with four minutes remaining. The home team was able to take a two goal lead just a minute later when Alexander Wardlaw slipped one past Damien Ketlo.

After a fast paced first period, the Ice Dogs broke through on the power play when Grant Toulmin scored on Bears goalie James Downie. The goal halfway through the period was assisted by Todd Stephenson and Shannon McGregor. Damien Ketlo stood on his head throughout the period, making a key save on Brian Funes in the final minutes to ensure the Bears didn’t further their lead.

The Battle continued into the third period and again the Ice Dogs began creating strong scoring opportunities and strategic plays. Just 32 seconds into the final period Grant Toulmin tied the game. Rory Rawlyk registered the lone assist on Toulmin’s second goal of the night. The Bears Tyler Noseworthy gave the rivals the lead with 13:19 left on the clock and with just under four minutes remaining the team took a 4-2 lead when Tyler Noseworthy scored his second of the night.

Damien Ketlo made 28 saves before being pulled in the final minutes. An extra attacker was not enough, and although with some quality chances, Sydney could not find the back of the net. The Ice Dogs went 1 for 4 (25.0%) on the power play and registered 26 shots on goal.

Despite the loss, the Ice Dogs held their own against the Bears and look to fight back when they take on the Adrenaline for a final time, at home on Sunday.
