Ice Dogs fall to Adrenaline
Sunday, July 16, 2017 - Submitted by Juno Tsalis

For the second game of the weekend the Ice Dogs took on the Adelaide Adrenaline. Although Sydney had a strong on ice presence, the team was unable to score and ultimately fell to Adelaide by a score of 0-2.

Adelaide’s Cam Critchlow opened scoring at Macquarie Ice Rink halfway through the first on an unassisted play. With just three minutes remaining in the period the Ice Dogs were awarded their first power play of the night when the Adrenaline’s Greg Oddy was sent to the box for hooking, however the team was unable to capitalise on the opportunity. Sydney headed to the penalty kill with 1:47 left on the clock when Scott Stephenson was given a minor for hooking. While on the penalty kill Dave Dunwoodie was also sent to the box for interference. The Ice Dogs finished out the first trailing by one.

After a strong first period, the scoreboard remained unchanged for the majority of the second until the final minutes when James Marino was sent to the box for slashing. Adelaide added some insurance on their power play opportunity when Greg Oddy snuck the puck past Damien Ketlo.

The Battle continued into the third period and again Sydney began creating scoring opportunities and offensive plays. Both teams saw a multitude of penalties throughout the period, which included a 20 minute game misconduct and five minute roughing major to Rory Rawlyk in retaliation to Adelaide’s Ben Gebert’s hit on Todd Stephenson. Gebert was also assessed a 25 minute match penalty for checking from behind.

Damien Ketlo made 31 saves before being pulled in the final minutes. An extra attacker was not enough, and although with some quality chances, Sydney could not find the back of the net.

Despite the loss, the Ice Dogs held their own against the Adrenaline. The Ice Dogs look to fight back for a top four position when they take on the Melbourne Ice for the first time, at home next weekend.
