Week Ahead: Dogs vs Mustangs and Ice
Tuesday, June 12, 2018 - Submitted by Juno Tsalis

After a successful weekend at home, The Sydney Ice Dogs have another busy weekend ahead of them. The team will travel to Melbourne to face the Mustangs on Saturday followed by their first meeting with defending champions, the Melbourne Ice on Sunday night. The Ice Dogs are looking to keep on top of the standings and take home all six points on offer.

ICE DOGS VS. MUSTANGS

All-Time: 14-11-1-2 (9-4-1-3 at home; 5-7-0-1 on the road)

Sunday's game will be the second meeting between the Ice Dogs and Mustangs, and the first of two meetings between the teams at O’Brien Group Arena. The Ice Dogs defeated the Mustangs, 6-2, in their first meeting of the season last Saturday and Macquarie Ice Rink. Grant Toulmin, Lee Turner, Geordie Wudrick and Jonatan Ruth have all registered at least one goal thus far in the season series, and two of those players (Toulmin, Wudrick) registered more than one point. Grant Toulmin also recorded a hat trick in the last meeting between the two teams the prior Saturday.

The Ice Dogs have won three of their last four games against the Mustangs, dating back to the 9th of July 2017. In addition, the Mustangs have been defeated in their last six games.

ICE DOGS VS. ICE

All-Time: 15-33-7-1 (8-14-4-0 at home; 7-19-3-1 on the road)

Sunday's game is the first of four meetings between the Ice Dogs and Ice. The first time the two teams met last season, on July 23rd, the Ice Dogs took down the then first placed Ice in a fast paced and physical game, by a score of 4-3. The Melbourne Ice have not won a game since their 4-3 shootout win on the 6th of May against the Adelaide Adrenaline and have been outscored by their opponents 22 to 10 since that win.

WHO’S HOT

  • Grant Toulmin has registered 19 points over nine games including 8 goals and a hat trick - just last Saturday against the Melbourne Mustangs. He heads the Ice Dogs in goals (8) and points (19) this season and in addition ties fourth in the AIHL in points amassed.

  • Geordie Wudrick registered four points (1G, 3A) last weekend and places only second to Grant Toulmin on the Ice Dogs in goals (5) and points (18) this season.

  • Curtis Skip has posted a 4-1-0 record, along with a 1.80 goals against average (GAA), a 0.941 save percentage (SV%) in 5 games in 2018. Skip made 25 saves in his last game, against the Mustangs on the 10th of June at Macquarie Ice Rink.

  • Lee Turner scored his second goal of the season last Saturday as he continues his strong play.

STATUS REPORT

  • Nathan Chiarlitti played his final game in the AIHL last Saturday as he moves back to Canada to begin his Masters Degree.

UPCOMING GAMES

Following this weekend, the Ice Dogs will play the Ice for a second time on Saturday June 23rd and then the Perth Thunder on the Sunday night. Both games are set to be played at Macquarie Ice Rink.
