Strat Allen doesn’t really blend in to the crowd. The 6'6" centre was a key signing before the 2015 season, and quickly became a fan favourite. Allen was a model of consistency who helped the less experienced players to stronger performances as the season developed. His efforts in the dramatic Battle of Sydney victory at home typified a player who is dedicated to hard work and improvement. While his 2015 Season ended with unfortunate injury, Allen has taken this work ethic into his rehabilitation and off season, and is more than ready for a big 2016. We sat down with the Ice Dogs’ popular Canadian for a chat about his time in Australia so far, and his hopes for the season to come. Ice Dogs: What were your expectations when you first came to Australia? How much did you know of the AIHL? Strat: I had heard from former AIHL players I knew back home in Canada, that the calibre of the play was actually pretty good and with each year the league was attracting stronger imports while developing local Aussie talent. Ice Dogs: What are the big differences between the Hockey you were used to and the AIHL? Strat: Two main differences I noticed right off the bat from College hockey was speed of the game & physicality. I think with such a mix of players from different leagues and local talent it creates a different brand of hockey but definitely improving and fun to be a part of. Ice Dogs: It took a few games for you to settle in, but once you found a rhythm, you were on a roll – especially the win vs the Bears – how do you think you went for your first season? Strat: You’ve got to remember, it was like me coming out of retirement moving over to play in Australia, so definitely had to get my hockey legs back. We had a couple strong games mid season once we added a couple other players up front but overall happy with my season last year. With a full season this year, I’m really looking to step it up. Ice Dogs: Obviously your season was cut short by injury – how did the rehab go over summer, and how are you feeling physically heading in to 2016? Strat: Rehab’s been going amazing all off-season. Working closely with my doctor and with physio, I’ll be hopefully back in full-form by the start of season. The stationary bike see’s more of me than my girlfriend! Ice Dogs: You’ve seen the moves the club has been making in the off season, including a new coach and general manager, how do you feel the club is progressing heading into the 2016 season? Strat: It’s no secret last year was tough year for the organization from management to coaching to our performance on the ice but this year will be different and couldn’t be more excited. I think the key will be the foundation of Australian players back and building solid imports around them. Fans should be excited cause all of us players are. Ice Dogs: Do you set yourself personal goals before each season, and if so, what are some of your aims for 2016? Strat: Being a part of the leadership group for the Dogs, setting the physical tone up- front in the middle of ice and being looked upon to add a scoring touch. Ice Dogs: Finally, you quickly became a fan favourite last season, any message for the Sydney Ice Dogs fans? Strat: Better get ready for a totally new team this year. The Kennel will be rocking and can’t wait to go to battle with the boys in front of the loyal Dog fans. |
