Weekend Preview

Weekend Preview

Gordon Goodenough

This weekend brings a huge weekend of hockey for the Ice Dogs, with matchups against both Melbourne teams on the docket.

Saturday - Melbourne Ice

Saturday evening sees the Ice Dogs face-off against the Melbourne Ice. These two teams met a fortnight ago, with the Ice Dogs dominating possession and the game, cruising to a 6-1 victory.

The Ice played well last weekend against the Mustangs in the Melbourne Derby, but were unable to come away with a victory, losing 6-4.

Meanwhile, the Ice Dogs lost their Derby against the Sydney Bears on Friday night, before showing resolve and pushing the league leading CBR Brave on Saturday. The Ice Dogs held a 2-1 lead after the first period but all the bounces went the Brave's way in the second and they held on for a 7-3 win.

The Ice will be looking to move up from last place in the standings and the Ice Dogs will be looking to move closer to the fourth and final playoff spot, currently held by the Mustangs.

Sunday - Melbourne Mustangs

On Sunday evening, the Ice Dogs will battle the Melbourne Mustangs for the first time this season.

Third-place in the AIHL standings is within reach for the Mustangs, and they will be coming off a testing trip to the second-place Newcastle Northstars on Saturday night.

The Mustangs have two former NHL players on their roster, Ty Wishart and Scott Timmins. It's exciting that the AIHL has been able to attract such talent to the league.

Ice Dogs' captain Daniel Pataky commented on the matchup, "Looking at the score lines, it seems that these two guys [Wishart and Timmins] have definitely made a difference to the Mustangs, however, two guys don't win you games. Expect a high pressure, physical game that the Dogs love."

The Ice Dogs are also running a Kids Free Sunday promotional event for the game, all children aged 13 years and under can get in free. With a public holiday on Monday, it's the perfect opportunity to take the family to see the best live sport in Sydney.

Make sure you get your tickets to both games at icedogsshop.com.au and we'll see you at the rink!
