MATT CLARK MEMORIAL SHIELD

MATT CLARK MEMORIAL SHIELD

The first ever Aussie to make the NHL and win the Stanley Cup, Nathan Walker is donating his gloves in a silent auction and greeting fans August 4th at Macquarie Ice Rink to help raise funds for Leukaemia Research.

It is all part of the Matt Clark Charity Shield which is hosted by the Sydney Ice Dogs (Walkers hometown club in which he played for as a 16 year old) of the Australian Ice Hockey League and contested against a different opponent each year as part of the regular season.

This year the Sydney Ice Dogs will be taking on the first place CBR Brave (Canberra). Walker will also be donating a stick as well an action photo to the cause as well.

Walkers not the only star making an appearance as former Sydney Thunder player Simon Keen and Fitness Expert and Former Sea Eagle Mike Chapman are lacing up the skates in the intermission to help raise funds.

What’s the Matt Clark Charity Shield?

Matt Clark used to play Ice Hockey for the old Warringah Bombers Ice Hockey Club and National Youth Team before he sadly passed away due to Leukaemia in 1995. Matt was just 17 years old. The Warringah Bombers also lost their ice rink just 2 years later.

Matt's last wish was that his friends and family find a way to raise money for leukaemia research.  The Bombers used to hold Matt Clark Memorial Games from 1995 to 2001 and contest for the Matt Clark Shield.  The shield is now back in action from 2016 thanks to the Sydney Ice Dogs who wear Warringah Bombers Jerseys with Matt’s last name on the back pay tribute.

The Ice Dogs have won the Shield in both 2016 (9-8 vs. Adelaide) and 2017 (4-1 vs. Perth) and will be looking to defend the Shield again.

Last year the match raised over $10,000 thanks to the help of Steve “Beaver” Menzies, Nathan Hindmarsh, Josh Perry, Dave “Wolfman” Williams, Tim Brasher and Cliffy Lyons.

Be sure to come August 4th, 5pm at Macquarie Ice Rink for what we surely be an entertaining night for a good cause.
